Clara started her Peace Corps work in Mali three months after her twenty-second birthday, and apart from the homesickness, she'd never been happier.
It was beautiful, brilliantly colored in oranges and reds, the polar opposite of home's greens and greys. She loved working with the kids, loved the deserts and mountains, loved playing tourist on her days off at the mosques and gardens. Two years wasn't enough. She was starting to think she'd be happy to stay here forever.
She came home with freckled shoulders and a taste for maafe, and dreamed of Mali for the rest of her life.
